Advanced Contact and Grounding Solutions: Fingerstock, Elastomers, and FIP Gaskets

Precision Grounding and Dynamic Contact Technologies for High-Reliability Electrical Paths.

In the design of modern electronic equipment, achieving effective electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) goes far beyond merely enclosing a system. Effective EMI shielding relies heavily on establishing a continuous, low-resistance electrical path between mating surfaces, PCB traces, and metallic chassis, which perfectly complements the structural enclosure protection discussed in our Guide to EMI Shielding Materials & EMC Gaskets.

As the Preferred Distributor & Converter for Laird (now part of Qnity Electronics), Euro Technologies delivers state-of-the-art Contact and Grounding Solutions tailored to meet the most stringent mechanical and environmental challenges across the Telecommunications, Defense, Automotive, and Medical sectors.

Contact Fingers (Fingerstock): The Gold Standard for Dynamic Grounding

When your application involves moving parts, sliding chassis, or frequently accessed enclosure doors, traditional gaskets may suffer from wear or compression set. This is where Contact Fingers, commonly known as Fingerstock, excel.

Typically manufactured from Beryllium-Copper (BeCu) or Stainless Steel, these mechanical spring contacts offer exceptional yield strength and anti-relaxation properties. They provide superior electrical conductivity and high cycle life, making them ideal for “shear” applications where friction is constant.

Euro Technologies offers an extensive portfolio of Contact Fingers that can be customized in length and plating (such as tin, nickel, or zinc) to ensure perfect galvanic compatibility with your specific enclosure material.

Conductive Elastomers: Dual Protection for Harsh Environments

For applications operating in extreme outdoor environments or industrial settings, electronics require more than just EMI shielding: they need robust environmental sealing. Conductive Elastomers provide the ultimate dual-functionality.

These advanced gaskets consist of a silicone or fluorosilicone binder heavily loaded with conductive particles—such as silver-plated aluminum (Ag/Al), silver-plated copper (Ag/Cu), or nickel-graphite. They guarantee:

  • IP-rated sealing
  • high-frequency shielding
  • excellent attenuation performance even in the microwave and RF ranges

For specialized high-frequency cavity resonance applications that require advanced absorption, discover our range of Microwave Absorbers & Conductive Coatings.

Our converting capabilities allow us to supply Conductive Elastomers in molded shapes, extruded profiles, or precision die-cut sheets, ensuring a perfect fit for complex grooved designs.

Form-in-Place (FIP) Gaskets: Precision Dispensing for Miniaturized Devices

As devices shrink—from wearable medical monitors to high-density telecom transceivers—the space available for traditional EMI gaskets virtually disappears.

Advantages of FIP Gaskets

Instead of applying a pre-cut gasket, a highly conductive silicone compound is robotically dispensed directly onto the hardware components (metal or plastic housings), ensuring:

  • space optimization
  • the ability to seal complex geometries
  • outstanding costs saving
  • assembly efficiency

Form-in-Place (FIP) Gaskets are the definitive engineering solution for miniaturized, multi-compartment housings.

The Euro Technologies Advantage: Local Support and Custom Converting

Specifying the right grounding material requires deep technical expertise. As your local engineering partner with a direct presence in Italy, France, Germany, and Spain, Euro Technologies bridges the gap between material science and manufacturing.

Being a Laird Preferred Distributor & Converter, we don’t just sell raw materials. We perform custom die-cutting and kiss-cutting of elastomers, and we provide internal capabilities for robotically dispensing Form-in-Place gaskets directly onto your supplied housings. Grounding challenges are also often accompanied by thermal bottlenecks; our technical team can help you co-design solutions that integrate EMI shielding with advanced Thermal Management materials.

Frequently Asked Questions on Contact and Grounding Solutions

In which application scenarios do copper-beryllium contact springs (Fingerstock) outperform other shielding technologies?

Contact springs (Fingerstock) are the benchmark for dynamic and high-cycle-life applications, such as shielding systems for anechoic chamber doors, sliding chassis or complex military modules. Thanks to the intrinsic mechanical properties of copper-beryllium (BeCu), these springs offer exceptional yield strength and are not subject to compression set (mechanical relaxation), ensuring consistent electrical conductivity even after thousands of opening and closing cycles under conditions of high shear friction.

Form-in-Place (FIP) technology overcomes the physical limitations of miniaturisation by enabling a conductive silicone seal to be deposited robotically directly onto the thin walls (as thin as fractions of a millimetre) of multi-chamber housings. The main advantages include:

  • Millimetre-level optimisation of on-board space.
  • The ability to seal complex labyrinthine geometries, which are impossible to manage with traditional die-cut seals.
  • Reduced manual assembly costs and zero material waste thanks to the fully automated process.

The closure force is a critical structural constraint. Solid conductive elastomers require a medium-to-high closure force to deform and ensure both electrical contact and environmental sealing (up to IP67/IP68). If the chassis is lightweight or made of plastic, this force could cause it to deform. FIP dispensed seals, by contrast, require an extremely low compression force, making them ideal for protecting the mechanical integrity of injection-moulded plastic housings or ultra-thin metal walls.
